More Moms Turning to Cosmetic Surgery for a "Mommy Makeover"
A new trend in plastic surgery offers moms opportunity to regain their pre-baby bodies by having cosmetic surgery after their pregnancy . The “mommy makeover,” a trio of surgeries , is increasing in popularity across the nation .
A mommy makeover often includes a breast augmentation or breast lift , a tummy tuck and liposuction . In the last year , doctors across the nation performed over 325,000 mommy makeover surgeries on moms between 20 and 40 years old , an increase of 11% compared to 2005, base on statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Oklahoma Plastic surgeon, Dr. Juan Brou, whose practice is based in Oklahoma City, said he has also seen a rise in mothers looking for these mommy makeovers types of surgeries .
“Weight gain during pregnancy will often put fat deposits in the wrong places ,” Brou said. “Someone can work and exercise very hard and these deposits still don’t go away. Some people just can’t shake it off.”
Many mothers turn to liposuction to remove these fatty areas. Breast augmentation and breast lifts are also popular post-baby plastic surgery procedures, Brou said.
“Even if women don’t breast feed, the breasts can still loose substance and volume,” Brou said. “Many women want their breast restored back to their original volume and look .”
Tummy tucks are another cosmetic surgery procedure that is common and can eliminate stretch marks and diastasis . Diastasis occurs when a woman’s abdominal muscles become separated, which sometimes happens with women who carry large babies. This condition leaves a woman with a lower tummy that cannot be exercised away.
Brou pointed out that it is important for women considering having their own mommy makeover to be sure they don’t intend to get pregnant again.
“I always tell the patient that if you want to have more kids to have them before the surgery,” Brou said. “Most commonly, patients came to see me after they’ve had about three children and are happy with the size of their family .”
