Stress and infertility: 13 facts

  1. Infertility is not directly caused by stress. You need to know this at the beginning, because feeling stressed and guilty about being tense is probably the least helpful thing you could do! Tension may make your menstrual cycle irregular, or it may diminish a man’s number of sperm, but it can’t be blamed for infertility on the whole.
  2. But anxiety may make infertility worse. You don’t need to be a rocket-scientist to work out that high levels of stress is not conducive to a vigorous sex life to begin with as it affects libido and energy levels. If you eat too much when you’re anxious you’re likely to pick up extra weight which may also affect your fertility negatively.
  3. Infertility may trigger stress. It is stressful to manage infertility issues. You might feel like a failure as a woman, or you could feel like you’re not a real man if you are battling to have a baby. You might start to think that you might have done something to cause the infertility, you may be angry or let down, or any number of other feelings. You have to break the cycle of infertility causing tension and tension making infertility worse.
  4. But being calm in no way a guarantee that you’ll have a baby. I’m sure you’ve had enough of all the stories about couples conceiving soon after adopting, or while on holiday. Others may warn you that you’re trying too hard and that imagining yourself pregnant will help. There have been loads optimistic laid-back couples who have never been able to get pregnant. Yes, reducing tension could certainly raise your chances, but reducing your anxiety isn’t a total guarantee that things will work.
  5. Money is a big stress factor. It is awful to know that fertility treatment is frequently only available to those who can access funds to pay for it. Even with health coverage or if you are personally able to afford the treatment, finance will always be  an issue.
  6. The battery of tests and treatments required could also cause tension. Fertility treatment is emotionally and mentally stressful as you have an assortment of medical professionals pushing and fiddling around where the sun don’t generally shine. Needles, inseminations, scans and surgery all play their part – they might be painful, upsetting or embarrassing. All the necessary procedures might also strain your body and this can add to your anxiety.
  7. Medication might make anxiety worse. You could already be battling with tense relationships and the mood swings caused by hormonal medication can make things even harder.
  8. Friends and relatives may make things better, or they could make it worse. Those whose task it is to help you may at times be your greatest source of tension. They can make insensitive comments out of lack of knowledge. Realizing that they mean well will help.
  9. Stress influences your relationship too. If you’re having plan sexual intercourse to make sure you do the baby dance on the correct day, at the proper time and in the approved position it can be stressful as it becomes a state of ‘we have to do it’as opposed to ‘we get to have sex’. One of the best bits of advice I’ve ever received is to think of ourselves as a team facing problems together, rather than taking your stress out on your partner.
  10. It’s stressful to have to keep waiting. First, you wait to conceive, after that you wait for a doctor’s appointment, then you wait for test results, then you wait for treatment, then for more results, and after that for your menses not to happen, and when it does do it all again. The waiting is probably the worst thing of it all as you swing from expectation to despair.
  11. Work is stressful enough as it is. It’s challenging to get on with your job with all these thoughts and feelings going on inside. You may also have to take a couple of hours off work to fit in all those doctor’s appointments, which could result in further tension as well. Aim to keep your colleagues in the loop so they can see how best to encourage you.
  12. It is stressful to have your plans ruined. At some stage, you’ll realize that there is only so much you can do regarding your infertility and this sense of not being in control might also be stressful.
  13. Choice. Those who deal best with challenges are those who understand that although they may not be able to pick their circumstances, they can choose how they let their situations influence them. Try not to give infertility control over every part of your life – you had a life before infertility – aim to get part of that life back.
